What to Do If Your Jeep Rear Bumper Light Adapter Does Not Work
Many Sunpie rear bumpers for the Jeep Wrangler JK, JKU, JL, JLU, 4xe and Gladiator JT include LED work lights and license plate lights. Some models also include taillight adapters designed to connect directly to the vehicle’s original taillight connectors.
In most cases, the adapters provide a simple plug-and-play connection. However, a small number of customers may find that:
- The supplied adapter does not fit the vehicle’s taillight connector.
- The adapter plugs in, but the bumper lights do not work.
- The lights flicker or operate incorrectly.
- The vehicle displays a warning message on the dashboard.
If any of these situations occur, you do not have to use the supplied taillight adapter. The bumper lights can be connected by hardwiring them directly to the appropriate factory taillight circuits.
Why Might the Taillight Adapter Not Work?
Taillight connectors and internal pin configurations can vary between vehicles. The most common causes include:
Modified or Aftermarket Taillights
If the original taillights or wiring have previously been replaced or modified, the connectors or internal pin layout may no longer match the factory configuration.
This is especially common on Jeeps equipped with aftermarket LED taillights.
Blind Spot Monitoring
Taillights equipped with Blind Spot Monitoring may use different electronics or internal pin assignments.
In addition, the BSM taillights on certain 2025–2026 Jeep Wrangler JL, JLU and 4xe models have been redesigned. Our current common JL-style adapters may not be plug-and-play compatible with these redesigned taillights.
Different Pin Configurations
Even if two connectors physically fit together, their internal pin positions may be different. The ground, running-light and reverse-light terminals may not be located in the same positions.
This can cause the bumper lights to remain off, flicker, operate with the wrong function or trigger a dashboard warning.
The Simple Solution: Bypass the Adapter
If the supplied adapter does not fit or does not operate correctly, do not force the connection or randomly change the pin positions.
Instead, leave the adapter unused and hardwire the bumper lights to the factory taillight wiring.
The two connections are straightforward:
- Connect the bumper’s white LED work lights to the vehicle’s reverse-light circuit.
- Connect the bumper’s license plate lights to the vehicle’s running-light circuit.
Once connected this way, the white bumper lights will automatically turn on when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse. The license plate lights will turn on with the vehicle’s parking lights or headlights.
This method completely bypasses any connector or pin-configuration conflict.
Wiring the White Bumper Work Lights
The bumper-mounted work lights emit white light and are intended to provide additional rear visibility.
Locate the factory reverse-light circuit and connect the positive wire for the bumper work lights to it. Connect the negative wire to a verified ground.
After installation, the bumper lights should:
- Remain off during normal forward driving.
- Turn on when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse.
- Turn off after the vehicle is shifted out of Reverse.
We do not recommend connecting the main white bumper lights to the running-light circuit because they would remain illuminated whenever the headlights are on.
Wiring the License Plate Lights
The license plate lights should turn on with the vehicle’s parking or running lights.
Locate the factory running-light circuit and connect the positive wire for the bumper’s license plate lights to it. Connect the negative wire to a verified ground.
After installation, confirm that the license plate lights turn on and off with the vehicle’s parking lights or headlights.
Important Wiring Precautions
Vehicle wire colors and pin positions may vary by model year, trim level, taillight type and previous modifications. Do not identify a circuit by wire color alone.
Before making any permanent connections:
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Use the vehicle’s wiring diagram or a multimeter to identify the correct circuit.
- Confirm the reverse-light and running-light functions before cutting any wires.
- Use automotive-grade connectors.
- Insulate and waterproof all connections.
- Keep the wiring away from the exhaust, sharp edges and moving parts.
- Test the factory taillights and bumper lights after completing the installation.
If you are not familiar with automotive wiring, we recommend having the connections completed by a qualified installer.
Does an Incompatible Adapter Mean the Bumper Lights Are Defective?
No. The adapter is included to simplify installation on commonly used factory-style taillight connectors. It is not required for the bumper lights to function.
If your Jeep uses a different connector, pin configuration, BSM taillight or aftermarket taillight, bypassing the adapter and hardwiring the lights is the simplest solution:
- White bumper work lights → Reverse-light circuit
- License plate lights → Running-light circuit
